UT Posts Fourth Top-Five Finish Of Fall Season
Kiawah Island, S.C. – No. 26/24 Tennessee repeated as team champions of the East Bay Deli Classic on Tuesday, and in the process the Vol men's golf program accomplished something it hadn't done since the 1981-82 season.
UT posted its fourth consecutive top-five finish to open a campaign, marking the first time of the Jim Kelson era and the first time since 1981-82 that the Big Orange had performed at that level over the first four tournaments of a season.
Spurred by three top-seven individual finishers, the Vols fired a 289 total on Tuesday to finish 9-over for the tournament at 873 and notch the 24th tourney crown under Kelson's watch. Jacksonville State was eight strokes back at 881, followed by Chattanooga (884), College of Charleston (896) and Rutgers (897) rounding out the top five at the Turtle Point Golf Course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
The Vols, who got a runner-up individual effort from Jack Smith in last season's team victory, also boast a second-place finisher in 2017. Sophomore Rhys Nevin (Cheshire, England) matched Monday's two-under-par score of 70 with another on the final day, finishing 1-under for the tournament at 215. He was two shots back of victor Art Griffin of Charleston Southern.
The second-place showing was the second of the season for Nevin. He also grabbed runner-up acclaim at The Jackrabbit on Oct. 1-3. His tournament-leading total of 14 birdies this week matched that of Griffin and Coastal Carolina's Morgan Deneen. Nevin added 31 pars as well.
In his return to the lineup following a trip abroad for the Italian Open, senior Lorenzo Scalise turned in a tie for fourth place. The native of Milan, Italy, carded scores of 73-72-72 to finish 1-over at 217. It was his second top-10 finish of the season and seventh of his career. Scalise finished with 30 pars and 11 birdies over 54 holes and dropped in an eagle on the par-4, 364-yard No. 17 on Tuesday.
Redshirt freshman Sean Wilcox recorded his second top-10 result and third top-20 effort of the season, finishing 4-over with a 220 total. The product of Frisco, Texas, posted rounds of 73-74-73 and helped Tennessee achieve a tourney-leading 190 pars and 53 birdies with a tourney-leading 38 pars of his own and six birdies.
True freshman Chase Roswall overcame a tough opening-round score of 90 to post a 78 and 74 in the final two rounds, with his 74 counting toward the Vols' tally on Tuesday. The Bristol, Tenn., product finished tied for 73rd overall with a 242.
Another true freshman, Spencer Cross, logged his second top-20 result of the year, winding up tied for 16th at 224. The Sevierville, Tenn., native was the Vols' fourth-highest finisher in the tournament.
Sophomore Brayden Garrison (Nolensville, Tenn.) tied for 25th, finishing 11-over at 227. It marked his second top-25 showing of the year.
The tournament marked the conclusion of Tennessee's fall season. The Vols will return to action on Feb. 5-6 at the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
