Sophomore Finishes With 14-Under 202 Over 54 Holes
VALENTINE, Neb. – Tennessee sophomore Rhys Nevin turned in the finest tournament of his collegiate career, helping the #23/18-ranked Vol golf team place second Tuesday in The Jackrabbit at The Prairie Club.
Nevin, from Cheshire, England, carded a final-round 68 on the Dunes course to finish second with a 14-under total of 202, just one stroke behind individual winner Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara. The UT men, who entered the day trailing Santa Clara by seven shots, wound up 36-under for the tournament, finishing three strokes back of the victorious Broncos. Kansas took third at 834, followed by Boise State and South Carolina, tied for fourth at 841.
All four of Tennessee's counting scores were among the top 25, led by true freshman Spencer Cross with a 10th-place score of 208 (8-under) in his first college tournament. The Sevierville, Tenn., native followed up rounds of 69 and 68 with a 71 on Tuesday. He finished with 11 birdies over the three-day event and didn't record a bogey until carding three today.
Sophomore Brayden Garrison just missed the top 10, tying for 11th with a 7-under and career-best 209. The product of Nolensville, Tenn., was second on the Big Orange with 15 birdies for the tourney and closed the trip with a 72 on day three.
Another sophomore, Jake Meenhorst, had UT's fourth counting score, posting a 71 over the final 18 holes and notching a tie for 20th overall with a 5-under and career-best 211. The native of Auckland, New Zealand, was tied for the third-most birdies by a Vol in the tourney with 11.
