WEST POINT, Miss. -- Freshman Waverly Whiston shot a career-best 68 in the second round of the Magnolia Invitational to lead the Volunteers and move up 21 spots into a tie for fourth place.

"Waverly has been playing well and her game is very solid," head coach Judi Pavon said. "She took advantage of her birdie opportunities and made a nice eagle on No. 13."

Whiston's four-under-par 68 is her third score below par this season and marks her first sub-70 score since donning the orange and white. The San Diego native also carded the first eagle of her collegiate career in the round.

"I was just playing really solid today, focusing on each shot and staying in the zone," Whiston said. "It was a fun round, especially with Ari waving at me up ahead and keeping me upbeat. Tomorrow, I'm just going to focus on each shot and each hole like I did today and have fun."

As a team, Tennessee sits in second place with a 36-hole score of 579 (+3) after Monday's round of 292. Ole Miss finished the day in first place (567, -9) while Memphis carded a two-day total of 580 (+4) to finish in third.

"We only had one good round today so I think we are in good shape to make a run at Ole Miss tomorrow. I expect Anna to play better and if we can eliminate some mistakes, we will be right in the mix," Pavon added.

Senior Anna Newell recorded 77 (+5) in the round to move to even in the tournament. She enters the final round tied for sixth place while fellow senior Blakesly Warren shot two-over 74, tying for 17th place (+3).

Carding 73 (+1) on Day Two, sophomore Micheala Williams is tied for 13th place with a 36-hole total of 145 (+1). Junior Ariana Macioce rounded out the lineup for the Lady Vols with a seven-over 79. She is tied for 53rd place.

Counting as an individual, Mariah Smith ended the second round tied for 42nd place after shooting a two-over 74.
