UT Shoots 17-Under On The Day, Moves Within Seven Of Leader
VALENTINE, Neb. – Four Vol underclassmen carded rounds in the 60s on Monday, helping the Tennessee men's golf team move into second place in The Jackrabbit tournament at The Prairie Club.
Three sophomores and a freshman dipped below 70, boosting UT into second place in the team standings with a 36-hole score of 547. That two-day total is 29-under-par and places the Big Orange seven strokes behind leader Santa Clara (540) heading into the final day of action. Kansas is four strokes behind Tennessee in third at 551.
It marked the first time the Vols had four sub-70 scores in a round since doing the same in round two of the 2015 Jackrabbit Invitational in Las Vegas on March 15-16. Coach Jim Kelson's squad went on to earn a runner-up finish at that tournament.
Tennessee sophomore Rhys Nevin followed up his opening round 66 with a 68 on Monday to move into a tie for third with a 10-under 134. The Cheshire, England, native trails individual leader Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara by three strokes on a links-style Dunes course that seems to suit his game well.
Fellow sophomore Brayden Garrison produced UT's low round for the day, following up yesterday's 70 with a career-low round of 67 on day two. The native of Nolensville, Tenn., is tied for eighth with a 7-under 137, thanks to five birdies and only one bogey on the afternoon.
True freshman Spencer Cross, playing in his first collegiate tournament, has put together consecutive rounds of 69 and 68 to match Garrison in eighth at 137. The Sevierville, Tenn., product collected four birdies and played bogey-free for the second day in a row.
Another sophomore, Jake Meenhorst, produced the fourth sub-70 round of the day. The product of Auckland, New Zealand, turned in a 68 Monday to move into a tie for 24th with a 4-under 140. He had six birdies to his credit.
The fifth member of Tennessee's lineup, senior Lorenzo Scalise, has carded back-to-back scores of 71 to stand tied for 37th with a 2-under 142.
Redshirt freshman Sean Wilcox, also in his first collegiate tournament, produced a 71 on day two to grab a tie for 24th at 4-under 140. The Frisco, Texas, native is playing as an individual.
Final-round action is slated to begin Tuesday morning. Wilcox and other individuals will tee off at 10:20 a.m. ET, followed later by Tennessee's lineup at 11:40 a.m. ET.
