Redshirt Freshman Paces #15/11 Tennessee On Day One
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Redshirt freshman Sean Wilcox fired a 5-under 67 in the first round on Friday and helped the No. 15/11-ranked Tennessee men's golf team grab second after the opening day of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
The Vols, who are 8-under with a team score of 280, are three strokes behind leader Penn State (277). UNCW stands in third (281), followed by #46/46 Louisville and Coastal Carolina tied for fourth at 282.
Wilcox, who opened his career playing as an individual at The Jackrabbit on Oct. 1-3 and tying for 20th, moved into the lineup this week and turned in a career-best round on Friday. He is tied with UNCW's Patrick Cover and Luis Ruiz of Coastal Carolina in second, just one stroke back of leader J.D. Hughes of Penn State (66).
The Frisco, Texas, native carded four birdies and an eagle on the day, covering the par-5, 517-yard No. 14 at the Blackthorn Club at The Ridge in three strokes.
With the team's lone senior, Lorenzo Scalise, playing as an amateur in the Italian Open this weekend, several other members of the youthful squad stepped up to fill the void. Sophomores Rhys Nevin and Brayden Garrison turned in two-under scores of 70 to hold a tie for 11th place. Nevin, from Cheshire, England, had four birdies on the day, while Nolensville, Tenn., product Garrison carded three.
Freshman Chase Roswall, playing as an individual, also fired a first-round 70 in the Bristol native's return to Northeast Tennessee. He matched Garrison's tally of three birdies.
The fourth score counting toward UT's first-day total came from Spencer Cross. The freshman from Sevierville, Tenn., finished the round 1-over, with his 73 tying him for 38th. Sophomore Jake Meenhorst of Auckland, New Zealand, was UT's other competitor, turning in a 3-over 75 to sit in a tie for 54th.
The Vols return to the course tomorrow, with Meenhorst starting the group off in the second round at 11:50 a.m. on No. 1.
