Lady Vols in 2nd, Newell Paces Field After Round One

WEST POINT, Miss. -- Senior Anna Newell paced the field on Sunday with a five-under-par 67 while sophomore Micheala Williams shot even-par to put the Volunteers in second place after the first round of the Magnolia Invitational.
As a team, Tennessee combined to shoot 287 (-1) and enters Day Two nine strokes behind first-place Ole Miss (278, -10). The Lady Vols hold a four stroke lead over Memphis and Auburn, who are tied for third place at 291 (+3).
Newell carded a round-best seven birdies en route to her sixth round of par or better and her fourth below 70 this season to finish the day in first place. During her Tennessee career, she's recorded 47 rounds at or below par. Two players, from Ole Miss and LSU, are tied for second place at four-under (68).
Rounding out the top 10, Williams sits tied for ninth place after tallying an even-par 72. Senior Blakesly Warren shot 73 (+1) in the round to tie for 16th place.
Freshman Waverly Whiston notched 75 (+3) in the opening round to tie for 25th place while junior Ariana Macioce finished two stokes behind Whiston with a score of 77 (+5, T38).
As an individual, Mariah Smith ended the first round tied for 47th place (79, +7).
Tennessee returns to action on the Old Waverly Golf Course for the second round of the Magnolia Invitational on Monday, October 2, starting at 9:30 a.m. ET.
