Newcomers Cross, Wilcox Tied For 13th
VALENTINE, Neb. – Sophomore Rhys Nevin fired a 6-under-par 66 Sunday, his lowest round as a Vol, to help #23/18-ranked Tennessee secure third place after the first day of The Jackrabbit at The Prairie Club.
Playing on the par-72, links-style Dunes course, the Cheshire, England, native carded eight birdies, including three straight on nine, 10 and 11, to pace UT to a 12-under day at 276. The Vols trail second-place Kansas (275) by one stroke and leader Santa Clara by 11 shots. Boise State is fourth at 278, and Houston is fifth at 279. SEC foes South Carolina and Missouri are eighth and tied for 11th, respectively, at 282 and 285.
True freshman Spencer Cross from Sevierville, Tenn., making his collegiate debut, produced a 3-under 69 to stand as Tennessee's second-best performer on the day. He played bogey-free golf and also turned in birdies on the final hole of the front nine and the first two of the back nine.
Sophomore Brayden Garrison of Nolensville, Tenn., was right behind Cross with a 2-under 70. He tallied three birdies and only a single bogey in the first round.
Senior Lorenzo Scalise (Milan, Italy) is tied for 34th at 71 (-2), while sophomore Jake Meenhorst (Auckland, New Zealand( is tied for 43rd with an even-par 72.
Redshirt freshman Sean Wilcox, who is playing as an individual, made his college debut. The product of Frisco, Texas, is tied with teammate Cross in 13th after checking in with a 3-under 69. He birdied three holes and did not record a single bogey on the day.
Second-round action is slated to begin Monday morning, and the final round will take place on Tuesday.
