San Diego State continues to lead the field with a two day total of 567 while Pepperdine sits in second place just three strokes ahead of Tennessee. Individually, Natalie Vivaldi of San Diego State is in first place after shooting -5 in the second round.
"Today was an up and down round," said Head Coach Judi Pavon. "After the turn, we had a bunch of birdies, but late in the front nine we had several three putts. It was a good round, but we really played much better than we scored. We are looking forward to tomorrow and having a better day."
Juniors Anna Newell and Blakesly Warren paced the Vols throughout the round, but especially on the back nine. They each shot three-under-par on their final eight holes to finish the round with twin scores of 70 and enter the third round tied for eighth place (-1).
"Blakesly and Anna both had great back nines and really got it going which was great for them and for the team," added Pavon.
Carding the only sub-par score on the front nine holes for the Orange and White, freshman Micheala Williams entered the back nine at one-under. In spite of several late bogeys, she finished the round with a birdie on 18 to duplicate her day one score of 73. Williams is tied for 17th place.
Hannah Pietila rounded out scoring for UT with a round of 77 (+5). She moved into a 37th place tie. Shannon Brooks shot 82 to finish the day tied for 60th place.
The Vols will begin round three of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at 12:45 p.m. ET in a shotgun start on Wednesday. UT is paired with San Diego State and Pepperdine for the final round.
