Duhamel earned his first conference award after his first official race with the team this past Saturday at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. Duhamel took 74th overall in a field of 228 competitors. He was the third Vol finisher as he completed the 8K in 26:12.5 in a competitive field featuring 11 schools ranked in the USTFCCCA’s regional rankings after week one.
Duhamel helped the Vols to an eighth place team finish despite having to deal with a lightning delay before the meet. There was also a downpour of rain throughout the competition which prevented the women’s team from running on Saturday.
“It’s an honor for Gashaw to receive this after competing in his first collegiate race,” director of track & field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan. “The goal was to run approximately 26 minutes on Vanderbilt’s course. He did just despite the conditions and it is exciting to see him rewarded for his efforts.”
This is the seventh SEC Freshman of the Week award for the Vols after Zach Long earned SEC Freshman of the Week twice during the 2015 season.
