Bailey, Gatlin Advance On Day 6 of U.S. Trials

EUGENE, Ore. -- VFLs Tavis Bailey and Justin Gatlin advanced on Day 6 of the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials at Hayward Field.
Bailey recorded the No. 6 throw in the men's discus qualifying round, reaching 60.17 meters (197-5) on his third try.
Gatlin, who is already on Team USA for the 100 meters, qualified for Friday's 200-meter semifinals after running the eighth-fastest time in the first round. Gatlin finished second in Heat 5 with a time of 20.32 (+0.9).
Tennessee rising junior Christian Coleman had qualified for the men's 200-meter first round with the No. 20 qualifying mark of 20.26. However, Coleman scratched from Thursday's first round for rest and will find out on Sunday if he made Team USA as a relay member.
Tennessee's Cassie Wertman, who returns to Rocky Top in 2017 for the outdoor season, finished 15th in the women's shot put qualifying round. Wertman threw 17.07 meters (56-0) with her third and final throw.
VFL Sarah Brown (formerly Sarah Bowman) finished 25th in the women's 1,500-meter first round with a time of 4:24.97. She placed ninth in the first heat, which was the fastest of the three, and missed making the final by just over two seconds. Brown is the subject of the five-part ESPNW documentary "Run Mama Run," which focuses on her training and preparation for Olympic Trials during pregnancy and in the months after giving birth.
VFL Ellen Wortham finished 25th in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.13. She finished fourth in a fast first heat.
VFL Liz Costello had qualified for the first round of the women's 5,000 meters. However, like Coleman, she scratched from Thursday's race.
Three Tennessee men will be in action on Friday. VFL Aries Merritt makes his 2016 U.S. Trials debut in the men's 110-meter hurdles first round at 3:02 p.m. PT/6:02 p.m. ET. Bailey competes in the men's discus final at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET. Gatlin runs in the men's 200-meter semifinals at 5:37 p.m. PT/8:37 p.m. ET.
VFL Felicia Brown will make her 2016 U.S. Trials debut in the women's 200-meter first round at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET.
