KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Women's Golf Program and Head Coach Judi Pavon officially announced the 2016-17 Vol Golf season schedule this week, a nine-tournament slate featuring appearances at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the 3M Augusta Invitational.
In her 17th year at the helm of the program, Pavon looks to lead the nine-player squad to the program's third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.
Among the nine Volunteer golfers, one will be a new addition. The new face will be freshman Micheala Williams. Prior to her senior year at Athens High School in Athens, Ala., Williams had claimed 43 individual titles in addition to 35 top-three finishes.
The Orange and White will be led by eight veterans, including WGCA First Team All-American Anna Newell. She will be helped by returning seniors Teleri Hughes, Emmie Pietila, Hannah Pietila and Lucia Polo in addition to junior Blakesly Warren and sophomores Shannon Brooks and Allison Herring. All eight returnees have stayed busy this off-season by competing in 15 different tournaments including the US Women's Amateur.
The team will open the 2016-17 season with the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., on September 12-13. This marks the first time in program history the Vols will host the opening tournament of their season.
Following the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, the Big Orange heads west to compete in the Golfweek Conference Championship on September 26-28 in Vail, Colo. Tennessee then returns for a two-week stint at home before travelling to Durham, N.C., for the Ruth's Chris Tarheel Invitational (Oct. 14-16).
To round out the fall, the Vols will make the trip to San Antonio, Texas to play in the Alamo Invitational (Oct. 23-25) for the first time since 2012.
Tennessee starts its spring tournament schedule at the Northrop Grumman in Palos Verdes, Calif., on February 12-14. The Orange and White then travel to South Carolina for the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate (March 3-5).
The Volunteers compete in two more tournaments, the 3M Augusta Invitational (March 17-19) and the Clemson Invitational (March 31-April 2), before playing in the SEC Championship in Birmingham, Ala., on April 21-23.
2016 NCAA Regionals, hosted by New Mexico, East Carolina, Texas Tech and Ohio State, take place May 8-10. Teams that advance out of the regionals will compete at the NCAA Championship in Sugar Grove, Ill., on May 19-24.
