Vols Earn 8 Medals on Day 3 of SEC Championships
May 14, 2016 | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Tennessee earned eight medals, including two golds, on Saturday to wrap the 2016 SEC Track and Field Championships in strong fashion.
The Tennessee women finished fourth with 76.0 points and the UT men took ninth place with 53.50 points. Arkansas swept the men's (121.00 points) and women's (126.75 points) team titles.
"We did a great job," Tennessee director of track and field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "First and foremost, the women were outstanding. Scoring 76 points was not what I predicted coming in here. We were hoping to score 50 and we scored 76. We were 14th a year ago and we were fourth today and in contention for second. It bodes really well and it shows the passion behind it and the kids working hard and getting after it. We just stepped up and competed. It was very fun."
"With the guys, we chipped away. We scored in just about every event we were entered in. It was great seeing Jake Blankenship back in top form and Tyler Porter, both seniors, coming through big-time and giving us 15 points there. Christian Coleman and the sprint crew and the 4x400 going 3:04.24 had a great day. Our seniors were really getting it done.
Jake Blankenship defended his SEC Outdoor men's pole vault, earning gold with a clearance of 5.65 meters (18-6.50). That mark is the second-best mark in the nation this year.
Felicia Brown continued her dominance of the women's 200 meters, winning in 22.26 (-1.3). That time is tied for the fastest in the U.S. this year and the second-fastest in the world. Brown, who was an SEC Indoor champion and NCAA Indoor champion in the 200 meters, is undefeated in 200-meter finals in her senior year. Brown also took bronze in the women's 100 meters with a time of 11.32 (-0.2) and bronze in the women's 4x400, running anchor on a team with Lenysse Dyer, Felecia Majors and Layla White that finished in 3:30.18.
Chelsea Blaase earned silver in the women's 5,000 meters, finishing in 16:16.97.
Majors raced to a career-best 51.29 to take silver in the women's 400 meters. That time the second-fastest 400-meter time in UT history, second only to DeeDee Trotter's program record of 50.00 in 2004. It is also currently fifth in the nation.
The Tennessee men's 4x400 of Ari Cogdell, Christian Coleman, Mustaqeem Williams, Nathan Strother took third place with a time of 3:04.24. Strother ran an incredible 44.44 anchor leg to get the Vols on the medal stand.
Coleman also earned silver in the men's 100 meters, clocking in at 10.19 (+1.0).
Tennessee will next compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round from May 26-28 in Jacksonville, Fla.
