Blaase Wins 10K On Day 1 of SEC Outdoors

***UPDATED following conclusion of late competitions***
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Chelsea Blaase won the SEC women's 10K title late Thursday night and Tennessee's sprint superstars stood out on the first day of the 2016 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sam Bailey Track.
After inclement weather in Tuscaloosa delayed the men's weight throw by nearly three hours, Blaase won the women's 10,000 meters in 34:00.47, battling the rain early on before pulling away late in the race. Blaase is a three-time SEC champion in 2016 as she previously took the women's 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter crowns at the league's indoor championships.
"It was a lot of fun," Blaase said after the win. "I just stayed relaxed and had fun with it and listened to my coaches the whole time. I just rode along for the ride, waited until I felt like I was ready to go and then took it and never looked back."
Blaase's victory on Day 1 of the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships put the Tennessee women in a tie with Kentucky for third place with 10 points. Georgia leads all women's squads with 12 points. On the men's side, UT stands in seventh place with four points from Austin Whitelaw and Cameron Brown while host Alabama leads with 15.
Whitelaw took sixth in the men's 10,000 meters with a PR of 29:54.46 after a power outage stopped the race three laps in. The race restarted once power was restored and Whitelaw ran with the front pack from start to finish. Cameron Brown took eighth in the men's hammer throw with a PR of 65.17 meters (213-9) on his fifth throw.
Felicia Brown raced to a blazing time in the women's 200-meter prelims, notching the No. 1 mark with a wind-aided to 22.19 (+2.6) to win the first heat. Felecia Majors will join Brown in Saturday's final as Majors clocked the seventh-best time of 22.85 (+1.9).
On the men's side, Christian Coleman ran a PR 20.42 (+1.5) to post the fourth-fastest time in the 200-meter prelims and advance to Saturday's final. That time is the sixth-fastest in the nation. Coleman leaps VFL greats Reggie Jones, Sam Graddy and Dentarius Locke for seventh place on UT's all-time 200-meter list.
Maya Neal had a busy day in the women's heptathlon. After the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters, she is in 10th place with 3,017 points. Neal finishes the heptathlon on Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.
