ATLANTA -- Tennessee opened the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships with a 14th-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
The Volunteer team of seniorSean Lehane, freshmanJoey Reilman, sophomoreSam McHughand seniorGustav Aberg Lejdstromcut nearly five seconds off their SEC meet pace to finish in 6 minutes, 19.92 seconds.
Lejdstrom rallied in the final 50 yards to beat out South Carolina at the wall by one hundredth of a second in the first heat.
Texas set a new NCAA and American record in the event, winning in 16:08.03.
UP NEXT: The championships continue Thursday with a full slate of events. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the 200 freestyle relay, the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 400 medley relay and 1-meter diving. Top 16 finishers from each event advance to the consolation (7-16) or championship (1-8) finals and score points for their teams.
