February 12, 2016 | Women's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The No. 16 Tennessee women's golf team battled against more than just opposing teams in the opening round of the Florida State Match-up on Friday as heavy winds became a factor in scoring across the board.
No participating team recorded a total score below par as Florida State leads the field with a five-over 293. Tennessee sits in seventh place with a total of 303.
"The conditions today were pretty tough, it was very windy," commented head coach Judi Pavon after the round. "We got off to a decent start but as the wind picked up we made some mistakes and didn't really take advantage of the birdie opportunities we did have."
Throughout the round, No. 9 ranked sophomore Anna Newell led the Vols, finishing the day at two-over par in a tie for 15th place. One stroke behind Newell, Emmie Pietila tied for 22nd place. Pietila carded three of Tennessee's nine birdies.
Both Lucia Polo and Shannon Brooks carded scores of 77, tying for 35th place.
Junior Hannah Pietila tied for 60th place at nine-over par.
In the Match-Up portion of the tournament, Tennessee and No. 23 Missouri sit in third place with a score of 382.
Tennessee begins the second round at 8:46 a.m. ET tomorrow.
