BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tennessee opened its 2017 indoor season at the Hoosier Open with two victories and nine top-three finishes on Friday at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Juniors Christian Coleman (33.26) and Nathan Strother (33.64) finished first and second in the 300m race as Coleman set a Gladstein Fieldhouse building record. Those were also the fourth and eighth fastest 300m times in school history as each of them bettered their mark from last year's competition. Coleman finished second with a time of 33.68 last season while Strother won in 33.67. This year they flipped spots as Coleman claimed first. Freshman Matthew Moore (35.22) took sixth in his collegiate debut while sophomore Darryl Harris (35.24) finished seventh.
"We definitely had a great day for the men's 300," director of track & field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "Coleman and Strother laid down some great racing in their first competition. We were excited to see Christian back in action for the first time since he competed in Rio and he looked great."
Freshman Darryl Sullivan claimed the high jump victory with a mark of 2.11m (6-11) as he cleared the distance on his first attempt to claim the Vols' second victory. Malik Elion took third in the men's 200m dash, posting a time of 22.42.
Seth Whitener earned a spot on the Vols' all-time top 10 list as he posted a 35-lb weight throw of 19.08m (62-7.25) on Friday. That tied Whitener for 10th on the list with Deon McAdoo who posted the same mark two years ago.
On the women's side, Lenysse Dyer helped lead the Vols at the 300m distance. Dyer took second in 38.48, trailing only VFL Ellen Wortham. Wortham ran unattached and finished in 38.33 to earn the victory. Shania Collins took fifth in her first race as a Vol, finishing in 39.11.
"Lenysse and Shania did a fantastic job in the women's 300m competition. Ellen Wortham won the race in her last competitive race, she is a true VFL and a champion," Alford-Sullivan said.
Three Vols competed in the women's weight throw and all three set personal records. Stamataia Scarvelis topped the Vols' contingent with a fourth place finish tossing the 20-lb weight 18.89 meters (61-11.75). That was good for the fourth best weight throw in school history. Savannah Marlow was not far behind as the sophomore tallied a mark of 17.70 meters (58-1), bettering her personal best and taking sixth in the competition and eighth on the school's all-time leaderboard. Candice Butler rounded out the group with a seventh place finish.
The Vols earned second and third in the women's long jump thanks to Cidae'a Woods and Maya Neal. Woods took second as she leaped 6.12m (20-1) while Neal notched a 5.97m (19-7) mark to claim third.
"Very happy to see the job that Maya Neal did in the long jump after transitioning from soccer. We also got some great jumping from Cidae'a Woods as well," Alford-Sullivan stated.
Maia McCoy equaled her career best with a 7.54 mark in the 60m dash as she took third and teammate DeAndra Greer claimed fourth in 7.55 for the Vols.
"We had a lot of things that went well, but there are still things that we can get better at." Alford-Sullivan continued, "we showed well in some areas, but you can see the fatigue after a long week of finals. We look forward to getting back to Indiana in about a month."
The Vols took on competitors from the host Indiana as well as Purdue, Cincinnati, Kentucky and a couple of schools who sent a few participants.
Tennessee will return to Gladstein Fieldhouse on Jan. 7, 2017 for their next competition, the Indiana Dual.
