AUBURN, Ala. — Tennessee sophomore Nick Rusek made his first collegiate final with his performance on the 3-meter springboard Sunday in the Auburn Diving Invitational at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.
Rusek, a native of Warwick, New York, placed eighth after the 3-meter preliminaries wth a six-dive score of 332.70. He remained in eighth after the evening finals (273.35). Senior Michael Howell was ninth after prelims with a score of 322.50.
In the women’s 1-meter competition, sophomore Emily Pelletier was 12th after the prelims and 13th after consolation final with a score of 228.70. Sophomore Sean Meyers was 20th with a score of 216.55.
“This morning’s prelims for the men and women were markedly better than yesterday,” Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. “I was pleased with how we were ready to go this morning. Nick did a nice job to qualify for the finals, finishing eighth. He and Mike were very consistent. Nick was showed his inexperience a little in the finals this event, but the experience he gained should help him down the road.
“On the women’s side, I was pleased with Emily’s 1-meter performance. She was very solid against a very strong field. She missed a couple things in the final, mostly aggressive mistakes. Sean continued to make progress.”
The meet concludes Monday with the men’s and women’s platform competition.
