WINDSOR, Canada -- Tennessee junior Peter John Stevens captured the silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle Sunday in the final session of the FINA Short Course World Championships.
Stevens set the Slovenian national record with a time of 25.85 seconds to earn a spot on the podium. South Africa's Cameron Van Der Burgh took gold in 25.64.
Earlier in the week, Stevens placed 18th overall in the 100 breaststroke (58.35).
A five All-American for the Vols, Stevens has proven to be one of the top sprint breaststrokers in the college ranks as well. The native of Medvode, Slovenia, was second at the NCAA Championsips in the 100-yard breaststroke last season.
In other Tennessee results over the championships, 2016 Olympian and 2015 graduate Molly Hannis won four medals. Individually, she took third in the women's 50-meter breaststroke (29.58) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.89). She also earned a gold medal by swimming breaststroke in the preliminaries for Team USA in the 4x50 medley relay; the Americans went on to win gold and set the world record the next night. She earned another gold as part of the preliminary 4x100 medley relay team.
Hannis placed eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.94), giving her top eight finishes in all three of her individual events.
Senior Kira Toussaint, swimming for the Netherlands again after representing her nation during the Olympics, placed ninth in the women's 50 backstroke (26.52), 12th in the 100 backstroke (57.73) and 18th in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.67).
