Rubadue, Silver Trio Lead Vols at GAC Invite

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Sophomore Rachel Rubadue won the 3-meter springboard and three Vols recorded second-place finishes Thursday as Tennessee wrapped up the first day of the NC State GAC Invitational.
After the first day of the invitational, the UT men and women are both fifth in the team standings. The three-day meet continues Friday with preliminaries in the morning and finals at night.
Rubadue recorded the Vols' first winning result of the meet on the 3-meter springboard, taking first with a score of 322.90. Fellow sophomore Emily Pelletier was seventh (259.80).
Tennessee's swimmers booked faster times across the events during the evening finals.
Freshman Meghan Small dropped nearly three seconds off her preliminary time to take second in the women's 200 IM in 1:57.27. Senior Colleen Callahan was 15th in 2:02.85.
Junior Sam McHugh raced the 200 IM more than three seconds faster than the morning to take second in 1:45.07.
Sophomore Kyle DeCoursey recorded a season-best 19.73 in the 50 freestyle to finish second. Junior Ryan Coetzee finished 16th (20.53).
In other top-16 final results, David Heron was 10th (4:25.70) and Taylor Abbott was 11th (4:26.70) in the 500 freestyle. Senior Kira Toussaint was 15th in the women's 50 freestyle (23.37). Junior Liam Stone placed fifth on the 1-meter springboard (298.15), followed by sophomore Nick Rusek in 10th (271.20) and senior Michael Howell in 12th (265.70).
