KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In their first tournament of the 2015-2016 season, the Vols were led by sophomore Anna Newell who posted a final score of 145 at the Cardinal Kickoff at The Highlands in John's Creek, Ga., on Tuesday.
"It was a good first tournament to get the jitters out to start the season," said Head Coach Judi Pavon. "Some new players got some good tournament experience on a very good golf course."
No. 15 Tennessee competed against Georgia State, two teams from No. 27 University of Georgia and two teams from the University of Louisville. The Vols placed third overall behind first place Georgia (A) and second place Louisville (A).
Newell `s rounds of 71 and 74 led the team and qualified her for third place, three places better than her sixth place finish at the tournament last season.
"Anna played really solid, especially that first 18," noted Pavon. "Both Teleri and Lucia came through in the second round. It's always impressive when someone improves in the second 18."
Lucia Polo shot rounds of 76 and 73 for a total of 149 (+5) and finished in a tie for fifth place. Finishing four places behind Polo was freshman Shannon Brooks. In her collegiate tournament debut, Brooks recorded scores of 72 and 79 (+7) for a ninth place tie. Brooks also carded the only eagle of the day.
"It was good to see Shannon and Allison in action to see how they would do under tournament conditions. Playing 36 holes is really a tough test, so they now have that experience too," added Pavon.
Blakesly Warren finished in a tie for fifteenth at 11-over par with rounds of 79 and 76 (155). Teleri Hughes placed behind Warren in a two-way tie for nineteenth place. She shot rounds of 84 and 73 for an overall score of 157 (+13).
Newcomer Allison Herring, who competed as an individual for Tennessee, completed her first collegiate tournament with twin scores of 90.
The Vols will return to action on September 20-22 for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
