September 30, 2015 | Women's Golf
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 12 Tennessee women’s golf team placed seventh at the annual Annika Intercollegiate held at Reunion Resort’s Watson Course on September 27 through September 29. The team recorded rounds of 284-288-291. At the three-day tournament, the Vols competed against 11 of the top 12 ranked teams from the final 2015 spring rankings, 11 of which were also ranked in the preseason top-30.
“We had a really good tournament. Finishing seventh in a field like this was pretty good,” stated Head Coach Judi Pavon. “We did a lot of great things but also could have played a lot better. We have some things to work on before leaving again next week.”
No. 2 Southern California claimed the tournament title after shooting rounds of 276-271-281. Karen Chung of Southern California shot 12-under par, earning the individual title.
For Tennessee, No. 17 Anna Newell led the team throughout the tournament with strong outings of 69-70-70. Newell placed sixth (-7) overall.
“Anna had a great tournament. She played with the two NCAA Championship runners-up and beat both of them. Sixth place was a great finish for her and really helped the team,” added Pavon.
No. 184 Emmie Pietila joined Newell in the top-20, tying for 19th place (-1). Pietila carded five birdies during the third round. Shannon Brooks, ranked as the 84th player in the nation, finished the tournament in 33rd place with a total score of 218.
After shooting 71 in rounds one and two and 76 in the third round, No. 182 Blakesly Warren tied for 43rd place. No. 39 Lucia Polo recorded an overall score of 225 and placed 50th.
The Vols’ fall season continues in Hilton Head, SC at Ruth's Chris Tarheel Invitational on October 9 through October 11.
“I think our team feels pretty confident after this week but also knows that we are good enough to compete with the top teams in the country. Everyone seems very motivated to get some work done and fix a couple things before heading to No. 71 UNC,” said Pavon.
