KAZAN, Russia -- Tennessee sophomore David Heron led Team USA with a sixth-place finish in the open water 5K on Saturday at the FINA World Championships.
Fresh off his silver medal performance earlier this month in the 5K open water race at the Pan Am Games, Heron continued his strong racing on the international stage. On Saturday, Heron completed the race on the Kazanka River in 55 minutes, 20.7 seconds, to place sixth in the field of 47.
The third through sixth-place swimmers finished the race within a second of each other. Chad Ho of South Africa won in 55:17.6.
Alex Meyer, competing for Tennessee Aquatics, finished 11th (55:25.3).
Heron and Meyer are also competing in the 25K later in the championships.
Sophomore diver Liam Stone, representing New Zealand, is still competing in the 3-meter individual and 3-meter mixed synchronized competitions.
