KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Chad Merzbacher received an individual bid to the NCAA Regional being played at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California. It will be hosted by University of San Diego and take place May 14-16. Merzbacher will be one of ten individuals competing for medalist honors in order to advance to the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Florida from May 29-June 3.
"It's an honor to make the NCAA Tournament," said Merzbacher. "I put a lot of work into my game this year, and it's nice to see that it has finally paid off. I really would've liked to make it as a team, but we know what we have to do next year to get better and not be in this situation again."
The Ohio native was the team's leader throughout the 2014-15 campaign. Merzbacher compiled a 71.97 stroke average through 35 rounds, 17 of which were par or better. He recorded four top-10 finishes, with his best finish being a fourth place finish at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. During one stretch, the junior posted seven straight top-20 finishes. Last time out, at the SEC Championship, Merzbacher posted a T-53 finish.
"I had a few rough tournaments at the end of the year, but I took a few days off to focus on my studies this week," Merzbacher said. "I think that helped to just relax a bit. My game looks like it's in good shape right now."
The Tennessee men's golf team missed out on a NCAA Regional bid for the first time since the 1999 season.
