Lady Vol Golf in Third at NCAAs
May 23, 2015 | Women's Golf
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Round two of the 2015 NCAA Women's Golf Championship was also delayed and eventually suspended. With two to four holes remaining, the No. 12 Tennessee women's golf team currently sits in third place at 27-over par.
Head Coach Judi Pavon saw her team get off to a hot start during Saturday afternoon's second round, recording five birdies through the first three holes.
"We got off to a really great start today, which is good," said Pavon. "You've got to make those birdies whenever you get an opportunity because there's so many difficult hole locations and long holes out here. We made a lot of bogeys and gave them back, but we have about four holes to go. There are a couple tough ones in there, but also a birdie hole."
Senior AJ Newell began the second round 1-over par. She proceeded to play the first five holes 2-under par, bogey the par-3 sixth and record three straight pars to close out the front-nine 1-under par. Newell carded another birdie on the par-5 13th, before giving it back with a bogey on the 14th. She will resume the second round from the 16th fairway.
"AJ's been really steady today. She's making a bunch of birdies," Pavon said about AJ's second round. "She's a little frustrated. She said she keeps making birdies and giving them back with bogeys, but I said at least you're making the birdies. So, she's in there good. She's on 16 fairway, which is one of the toughest holes. So, when she gets through there I think she'll be fine. She's in great shape for the tournament and really having a good round to help us out."
Sophomores Emmie Pietila and Lucia Polo both will resume the second round with scores of 4-over par. Polo will resume on the 15th, while Pietila will resume on the 14th. Polo began the second round with a bogey on hole one, but bounced back to card a birdie on the second. She currently sits tied for 64th place at 12-over par. Pietila carded a birdie on the par-5 third, but fell upon hard times on the fifth and ninth, posting double-bogeys on both. She birdied the par-5 13th before the horn sounded when she was on the 14th. Pietila currently sits in a tie for 73rd at 13-over par.
Freshman Anna Newell had a tough front-nine on Saturday, making the turn at 6-over par. Newell recovered with a birdie on the par-5 13th, but gave it back with a bogey on the 14th. She will resume the second round on the par-4 15th. After an impressive opening round, sophomore Hannah Pietila carried the momentum through the first three holes, recording two birdies and one bogey. She made the turn at 2-over par, before recording a triple-bogey on the 15th. She will resume play on the 16th in a tie for 42nd place at 9-over par.
Pavon is looking forward to seeing how her team handles finishing out the second round, but is seeing her players continue to learn the ways of the course better with each shot.
"We'll come out tomorrow morning and we really need to keep it together and finish this round as well as we can," said Pavon. "Again, we're getting to know the greens and the course better and better each day. So, we'll be able to make better and better decisions into the greens as we get to know them better."
After completing 11-14 holes, Southern California currently leads at 14-over par. Baylor is the leader from the teams completing their second round, but currently sits in fourth place at 28-over par. Southern California's Annie Park tops the individual leaderboard at 2-under par through 11 holes of round two. Emma Talley (2) of Alabama leads those whom were able to complete the second round at 1-under par.
On Sunday, Tennessee will finish the second round beginning at 8:25 a.m. (ET). The official third round tee time for the Lady Vols is yet to be determined, but they will be part of the second wave of the third round scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
