Stone Named Freshman Diver of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The Southeastern Conference announced its end-of-season awards Tuesday and the Volunteers won both Male Freshman Diver of the Year and Head Diving Coach of the Year, and 15 athletes earned spots on the all-conference teams.
After a very successful week during the 2015 SEC Championships at Auburn University in February, Liam Stone received the Male Freshman Diver of the Year, while Head Diving Coach Dave Parrington received the Men's Diving Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career.
"I couldn't be more proud of him and he's had such an outstanding freshman campaign, highlighted by the coaches' vote as Freshman Diver of the Year, which makes it much more special," said Parrington. "It certainly bodes well for his future.
"Anytime you win an award that's voted on by your peers and competitors just makes it that much more special. I'm very thankful for all the support from UT that puts me in a position to win such an award."
After coming to Knoxville in January, Stone earned his honor after landing on the medal podium in both the one-meter and three-meter springboards at Auburn, winning the gold medal in the three-meter with an SEC record 463.50, and followed that up with a seventh-place finish overall at the NCAA Championships last March in Iowa City, Iowa.
This is the second year in a row that a UT diver has won a conference award. One year ago, Mauricio Robles was named the Male Diver of the Year.
In addition, Tennessee placed 18 athletes on all-conference teams. On the men's side, Sean Lehane, Mauricio Robles, Peter John Stevens, Jacob Thulin and Troy Tillman joined Stone on the All-SEC first team, while Sam McHugh earned an All-SEC second team selection. McHugh, Stevens, Stone and David Heron received All-SEC Freshman honors.
The women's team placed seven athletes among the top two conference teams. Harper Bruens, Amanda Carner, Anna DeMonte, Molly Hannis and Faith Johnson earned First Team honors, while Amy Lubawy and Cherelle Thompson landed on the All-SEC Second Team. Lubawy is the only UT female freshman to make an SEC list for the Vols.
