Women's Golf Jumps Into Sixth Place

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Despite a delay this morning to due to frost and cold temperatures, the Lady Vol golf team jumped into sixth place at the conclusion of the second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club (par 71, 6,142 yards).
After shooting a first round of 300, Tennessee improved on day two with a score of 294. The total of 592 (+24) makes for a tight race with the final round set to begin tomorrow morning. Duke leads the field with a score of 576 (+8). The No. 4 and 5 spots are taken by Mississippi State and South Carolina and are within two strokes of UT.
"Today was a much better round, but we still left a few shots out there," head coach Judi Pavon said. "It was great to move up the leader board and to put ourselves in position for a good finish tomorrow. I'm proud of how Emmie [Pietila] and AJ [Newell] came back with a good round."
Every score counting towards the team total was significantly improved from the first round. Freshman Anna Newell remains in the top-10. She shot a round of 75 to bring her total to 145 (+3). She sits in a three-way tie for sixth place.
Sophomore Emmie Pietila is continuing an impressive spring, shooting just one-over par to lead UT in the second round. Her second round improvement moved her into a four-way tie for 17th place with a ttoal of 147 (+5).
AJ Newell shot a score of 73 (+2) to finish in a 34th place tie. Lucia Polo ended the round with a 74 and a two-round total of 152 to finish in a seven-way tie for 45th place.
Hannah Pietila rounded out Lady Vol scoring and shot a round of 81 to bring her total to 163 (+21).
