KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--The Southeastern Conference announced the 2015 Swimming and Diving Community Service Teams for both men and women Thursday afternoon, and a pair of Vol swimmers represent the Big Orange on this year's lists.
Each of the 10 men's programs and the 12 women's programs nominated one athlete for the team, which highlights the service each athlete has displayed out of the pool, around their respective communities.
Senior Cherelle Thompson represents the UT women's program, adding this accolade to the two times she's made the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the All-SEC Second Team. The 2014 All-American has facilitated weekly swim clinics at the Westside Family YMCA and Bob Temple Northside YMCA.
The kinesiology major also has participated in a pair of on-campus events as well. Thompson helped out at the "Backs for Breasts" event earlier this season at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center, while also volunteering at the "Voloween" event at the Neyland-Thompson Center in October.
Off campus, Thompson served as a mentor for the swimming program at the Emerald Youth Foundation. She also recorded almost 18 hours of her time at the Water Angels Ministry 180 Gang, aimed to prevent young kids from joining Knoxville gangs.
Ben Myhre, a Knoxville local, has served his hometown in many ways to earn UT's spot on the men's list. Besides serving with Thompson at the "Voloween" event, Myhre acted as a counselor at the "Breast for Breasts" event at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center, teaching kids proper swimming techniques and drills, all while helping raise money for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research. Myhre volunteers at the UT Medical Center, which put on a Man Run, benefiting prostate cancer research, outreach and educational programs in East Tennessee.
The junior also has served in multiple ways through his church. Ben has been a referee for youth basketball games and a community volunteer at Knoxville's Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. On campus, Myhre works with The Warriors, a UT Campus Bible Chapter, where he facilitates weekly meetings regarding campus issues and events, such as security in Fort Sanders, underage drinking and other UT safety concerns.
