Trio Earns SEC Swim & Dive Honors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee’s Evan Pinion, Mauricio Robles and Madeline Banic earned SEC weekly swimming and diving awards for their performance at the Tennessee Invitational, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Pinion was named co-swimmer of the week after swimming the fastest 500-yard freestyle (4:14.97) and 1650-yard freestyle (14:44.23) in the NCAA this season. He broke the school record in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle (8:52.49).
He also led off the Vols’ 800 freestyle relay team with the eighth-fastest time in program history (1:35.61).
Pinion shared the weekly swimming honors with Florida’s Caleb Dressel.
Robles earned SEC Diver of the Week honors for a second time this season after winning two of three diving events at the Tennessee Invitational. He won the 3-meter springboard with a career-best total of 433.20. He broke through the 400-point barrier on the platform in more than a year, winning the event by more than 60 points with a six-dive score of 407.10.
He also placed second on the 1-meter springboard to sophomore teammate Liam Stone, finishing with 354.80 points.
Banic took her first SEC honors as freshman of the week. She swam the fastest 100 butterfly in the nation this year, reaching the wall in 51.19. It is the second-fastest time in the event in program history.
She also swam the 50 freestyle in 22.24, which is the 11th fastest time in the country. She placed ninth in the event and also finished ninth in the 100 backstroke.

Several Tennessee swimmers will compete in the USA Swimming Winter National Championships, which will be held Dec. 3-5 in Seattle. The USA Diving Winter Nationals is also next month.
The next collegiate diving competition is the Georgia Invitational, Jan. 3-5 in Athens, Ga. Tennessee’s swimmers and divers will team up again for a two-day meet at Alabama starting Jan. 8.
