Long is the first SEC Men's Freshman Runner of the Week for cross country since Kyle Walter earned the honors on Sept. 18, 2012. It is the 12th time in program history a Tennessee men's cross country runner has received an SEC weekly honor (Runner of the Week or Freshman Runner of the Week).
Long was Tennessee's top finisher in Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic Gold Race at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, placing 78th with a time of 25:06.83. It marked the first time he was UT's top finisher as he paced the Vols to a 14th-place team finish in a 24-team Gold Race that featured a loaded field. Saturday's Gold Race had four teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Top 30, including No. 4 Wisconsin, No. 8 Iona, No. 10 Michigan and No. 28 Eastern Kentucky. Tennessee's top three of Long and veterans Walter and Jack Little were able to stay together for much of the race.
The Vols will be back in action on Oct. 17 when they return to E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville for Pre-Nationals. That will be UT's final meet before the 2015 SEC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 30 in College Station, Texas.
