BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Tennessee swimming and diving team went a combined 3-3 Friday in a quad meet that featured Indiana, North Carolina and Kentucky.
The Tennessee women (4-3, 2-0 SEC) rebounded from their loss Thursday at Louisville by beating Kentucky 193-107 and Indiana 153-145 and losing to North Carolina 184-116. The Tennessee men (4-2-1, 2-0 SEC) defeated Kentucky 212-88 but lost to North Carolina 166-143 and Indiana 156-144.
The UT women won just 2 of 16 events but relied on depth to score most of their points, going 1-2-3 in the 200-yard individual medley late in the meet. The men won seven events, highlighted by two-win days from Sean Lehane, Mauricio Robles and Evan Pinion.
Senior diver Mauricio Robles recorded the second-best score in Tennessee history on the 1-meter springboard, throwing down a total of 417.40. It was just four points away from his school record set last season at the SEC meet. He also won the 3-meter event with a score of 379.00.
"It was a phenomenal day for Mauricio on 1 meter," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "He was a model of consistency. He hit every dive. He didn't miss and hit them well. There's still room for improvement there. To go over 400 especially this time of year, I could not be more pleased. It was a tightly judged event with five judges. He had a good enough performance to win.
Pinion scored consecutive two-win days for the Vols in the distance events, taking first in the 1000 freestyle (9:08.03) and the 500 freestyle (4:23.08). The Knoxville native's 500 free time is the second fastest in NCAA this year.
Lehane, who swam the fastest 200 backstroke time in the NCAA this season the day before, remained undefeated in the backstroke events this season. He won the 100 backstroke in 47.65 and the 200 backstroke in 1:43.23.
Tennessee's women closed the meet strong with Micah Bohon leading the way in the 200 IM. She won the race in 2:01.76, followed by Amanda Carner and Lauren Driscoll in second and third. The team finished the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
The UT women was also took three of the top five spots in the 50 freestyle. Madeline Banic took second in a career-best time of 23.00, followed closely by Faith Johnson. Alex Cleveland was fifth.
Banic was also second in the 100 butterfly (52.85).
In women's diving, Sarah Chewning was third on the 1-meter board (276.20) and fourth in the 3-meter competition (277.35).
"Sarah's continuing to come back from offseason surgery, working on her strength and confidence," Parrington said.
Tennessee's men and women started the meet with wins in the 200 medley relay.
