October 28, 2015 | Swimming & Diving
The Tennessee swimming and diving program is back at it this week with a pair of road meets against nationally ranked competition Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday, Tennessee takes on Louisville at 2 p.m. Eastern. On Friday, the team will compete at Indiana in a 2 p.m. quad meet that features UT, IU, Kentucky and North Carolina. The quad meet will be streamed as part of the Big Ten Network.
The Tennessee men have opened the year 2-0 and 1-0 in SEC play, having defeated Virginia and Missouri on the road two weeks ago. The UT women are 2-1 and 1-0 in conference, beating Missouri but losing to Virginia.
This is the second time Tennessee has competed on back-to-back days, having also done two weeks ago at Missouri and Virginia.
A Nationally Ranked Field: The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released its first women’s poll of the year, with the Vols checking in at No. 10 nationally. The men’s poll has not yet been released. The website CollegeSwimming.com produces its own rankings using an algorithm based on times and team results; the men are ranked 11th and the women are ninth.
In the women’s CSCAA top 25: North Carolina is No. 5, Louisville is No. 8 and Indiana is No. 11. The UK women are unranked.
Though the men’s poll as not been released yet, here’s a look at how the participating teams finished at NCAAs last year: Indiana was 12th, Tennessee was 14th, Louisville was 15th and UNC was 18th. Kentucky competed at the NCAA meet but did not score.
Individual Notes: The last time Tennessee competed, sophomore Sam McHugh earned national recognition. He was the SEC Swimmer of the Week and later the CollegeSwimming.com’s National Swimmer of the Week after winning all six of his individual events. At the time of the meets, he ranked in the top 10 nationally in the 200 and 400-yard individual medleys and the 200 butterfly.
Senior Sean Lehane has been unbeaten this year in the 200 backstroke. He currently ranks second nationally with a time of 1:43.41.
Senior Faith Johnson swept the 50 and 100 freestyle events against Missouri. She backed that up with two second-place finishes in the events at Virginia, a team that has opened the year ranked fourth nationally. Fellow senior sprinter Harper Bruens scored a win in the 50 free at Virginia.
In diving, senior Mauricio Robles won three of four events in the meets at Missouri and Virginia. The seven-time All-American scored in the 380s in the 3-meter competition twice while using a new dive in his list. Freshman Rachel Rubadue got her first career victory with a win on 3 meter (333.98).
