JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Tennessee finished in third place--marking its highest finish of the season--after shooting a final round 4-under Sunday in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club.
The season-low 54-hole score of 861 (-3) marks the first time this season that the Vols finished a tournament below par. With a 10-under second round and 4-under final round, Tennessee also shoots back-to-back rounds below par for the first time this season.
Senior Chad Merzbacher shot the lowest Tennessee score of the weekend with a 4-under. He tied for ninth, marking his second top-10 finish of the season after three tournaments.
"I felt better about my play this week," Merzbacher said. "I just stayed mentally tough this tournament. I never got down on myself. I think that is going to be the key this year for the team--being mentally tough and competitive."
Merzbacher shot at or under par in all three rounds of the tournament, the first time he accomplished that feat since last season's Jackrabbit Invitational in March 2015.
Sophomore Lorenzo Scalise paired his 7-under second round with a final round 2-under, shooting under par in back-to-back rounds for the first time this season. Over the final two rounds, Scalise birdied 11 and bogeyed two. He finished the tournament 3-under and in a tie for 12th.
Junior Jack Smith finished at even par after shooting a final round 71 (-1). He led the team with five birdies Sunday. Smith also posted back-to-back rounds under par for the first time in the 2015-16 season.
Senior Michael Nagy eagled the par-5 14th and finished 6-over for the tournament, while freshman Nicklas Mattner finished 11-over.
Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara, who competed as an individual, birdied three on the day and finished the tournament 2-over.
The golf program will be back in action when it competes at the Gifford Intercollegiate in San Diego, California, Nov. 2-4.
