Lady Vols Conclude Cardinal Kickoff
September 08, 2014 | Women's Golf
The Lady Vols golf team was led by senior AJ Newell in the season-opening competition at the Cardinal Kickoff on Sunday at Chariot Run Golf Course in Laconia, Ind.
Facing golfers from Cincinnati, Georgia, Morehead State and Louisville, the Lady Vols competed as individuals rather than as a team.
"The first round got off to a shaky start," head coach Judi Pavon said. "They course played pretty differently than the practice round and there were some early nerves. Teleri [Hughes] had a very solid round considering the conditions."
AJ Newell finished in fourth place, shooting a career low round of 69 in the last 18 holes after a first round of 81. She finished six-over par with a final of 150.
"The second round was much better," Pavon said. "AJ found her form and had the low round of her career, as did Mason [Chen]. Anna [Newell] also played very well in round two."
Anna Newell finished behind her sister and in a tie with Hannah Pietila for sixth place. Anna Newell shot rounds of 80 and 72 for a total of 152 (+8). Newell led the field in Par 5 scoring for both rounds. Pietila shot rounds of 78 and 74 for the identical final.
Teleri Hughes stayed consistent with rounds of 76 and 77 for a 153 (+9) finish. Freshman Blakesly finished her first collegiate tournament in a three-way tie for 12th place with twin scores of 77. Mason Chen also finished in 12th place and shot a combined score of 154 (+10). Chen's first round of 83 was followed up by a career low round of 71.
The Lady Vols will return to action for the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. on Sept. 14-16. For the latest information on Tennessee women's golf and up-to-the-minutes updates, follow the team's Twitter account at @LadyVol_Golf or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LadyVolGolf.
