Vol Golf Ready for Carpet Capital

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee men's golf team will begin its 17th season under the leadership of head coach Jim Kelson on Friday. The Vols will travel to Dalton, Ga., for the 26th annual Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm.
"We are really looking forward to getting back to Dalton," Kelson said. "The Carpet Capital Collegiate is one of the premier tournaments in college golf."
"This is the most excited I have been in a long time to get the season started," added Kelson. "We have a really good group of guys."
The 2014 Carpet Capital features five top-25 teams from the Golf Coaches Association of America Preseason Poll, as well as four teams that received votes.
Last season at the Carpet Capital, Tennessee finished tied for 11th amidst equally tough competition. The Vols bright spot came in the form of now-sophomore Jack Smith. The youngster finished tied for 27th in his first ever collegiate match.
This year Coach Kelson will start sophomore Serrano Guevara, freshman Lorenzo Scalise, junior Mike Nagy, sophomore Jack Smith, and junior Chad Merzbacher. In addition, senior Thomas Dunne will play as an individual. Scalise will be competing in his first ever collegiate tournament.
Tennessee last won the Carpet Capital in 2009. The Vols were led by sophomore Darren Renwick, who won the individual title with a 210 (-6).
Other past Tennessee golf success at the Carpet Capital came in 1990 when Mike Sposa won the individual championship with a 209 (-7).
