WOLCOTT, Colo. - The Tennessee women's golf narrowly finished behind Pepperdine by just one stroke in the final round of the GolfWeek Conference Challenge on Fazio Course (par 72, 6,249 yards).
The Lady Vols finished the tournament with a combined total of 863 and shot their best round of 281 on Wednesday. In the first two rounds, the team shot 285 and 297, respectively.
"Today was a great day," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We played very well today and competed every shot all day. To shoot seven-under for the day was awesome. We did our job out there. Pepperdine played well and came out on top but I'm very proud of our team."
Anna Newell once again led the group with a career low round of 67. Her low round was also the second lowest round of the tournament. She tied for second place alongside older sister and senior AJ Newell. Newell shot two-under par 70 in the final round. Both Newell sisters totaled a score of 214.
Sophomore Hannah Pietila followed behind with a combined total of 215. Pietila finished in fifth place after shooting a one-under par. Lucia Polo and Blakesly Warren finished in ties for 11th place after twin third round scores of 73.
Pepperdine took both team and individual honors. As a team, Pepperdine scored an 862 and their own Marissa Chow shot a 210.
On the course, Tennessee led in Par 3. They were just one birdie shy of leading the field with 54 shot throughout the tournament. Anna Newell had the most for the Vols with 14 birdies.
The Lady Vols will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 when they host the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
