WOLCOTT, Colo. - The Tennessee women's golf team improved in the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge to finish the day in a first-place tie with Pepperdine.
The Lady Vols shot 297 in the second round, two strokes more than their first round, bringing their combined total to 582.
"Today was a really up and down round," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We had a ton of birdies, but made some bogeys and a couple big numbers that hurt us. We are pleased to be tied for the lead going into tomorrow."
The team was led by three different individuals during different points of the round, but AJ Newell and Hannah Pietila once again finished at the top with twin scores of 74 (+2) for a third place tie. AJ Newell carded six birdies in the round to lead the group.
Freshman Anna Newell finished three-over par 75 and remains in the top-10 with a ninth-place tie to end the day. Lucia Polo rounded out the Lady Vols scoring with her second score of 74 in the tournament. She moves into an 11th-place tie alongside freshman Blakesly Warren. Warren shot a 75 (+3) and had posted four birdies.
"I expect them to keep competing well and to eliminate a few mistakes that we made today," Pavon said. "All five girls are in the top-11, which is awesome. I look forward to them playing well again tomorrow."
The Lady Vols will be back in action on Wednesday for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MT. Live stats will be available on GolfStat.com.
