Lady Vols Begin NCAA West Regional

CLE ELUM, Wash. - The Tennessee women's golf team sits in 15th place after one round of play at the 2014 NCAA West Regional. The Lady Vols finished their first round by carding a 306 (+18).
UT kicked off its 22nd consecutive NCAA postseason appearance by sinking eight total birdies at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort.
The trip to Cle Elum, Wash., was a homecoming for senior Chessey Thomas. The Spokane, Wash., native led the Lady Vols with a first round 75 (+3).
"I hit it poorly off the tee today, but I was able to do a decent job of getting around in spite of that," Thomas said. "As a team, we held it together as well as anyone in the tougher afternoon conditions which is encouraging for tomorrow."
Thomas currently sits tied for 35th place heading into Friday.
Junior Mason Chen matched Thomas' play by carding a 75 (+3), her best round in over a month. Chen is tied for 35th place in her first NCAA postseason appearance.
Freshman Hannah Pietila is tied for 62nd place after carding a first round 77 (+5).
After battling a spring injury, junior AJ Newell returned to action to card a first round 79 (+7). Newell sank a birdie on No. 15 only to drop a triple bogey on No. 16. Newell enters Friday tied for 80th position.
Freshman Lucia Polo rounded out the Tennessee lineup by posting an 81 (+9), putting her in a tie for 104th place. Polo had two birdies on the day, but recorded a quadruple-bogey on No. 7.
Tennessee will begin its second round on Friday morning at 11:25 a.m. (ET).
