EUGENE, Ore. -- The Tennessee men's golf team bounced back from a rough first day to shoot a second round total of 292 (+12) at the 2014 NCAA West Regional. The Vols moved up to 9th place on the Eugene Regional leaderboard. The top five teams at the end of Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas.
UT took a big step in reaching the championships by posting its 12-over par total on Friday. The round was highlighted by stellar play from freshman Jack Smith and sophomore Mike Nagy.
Smith led the Volunteers by posting a 71 (+1). The native of Knoxville, Tenn., recorded two birdies and jumped 18 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 50th place. Friday provided a much needed rebound for Smith after his first round 80 (+10).
"I've played better than my scores would indicate," Smith said. "I didn't get many birdie chances but I made a lot of good par saves."
Smith has totaled 25 pars through 36 holes, tying him for third most in the tournament.
Nagy continued his hot streak at the Eugene Country Club by sinking four birdies en route to a second round total of 72 (+2). The native of Manistique, Mich., leads all Tennessee players with a two day total of 143 (+3). Nagy is currently tied for 14th place.
Continuing the theme, senior Danny Keddie greatly improved his game on Friday. The Englishman carded a 74 (+4), highlighted by two birdies on the back nine. Keddie will enter the final round tied for 55th place.
Sophomore Oliver Goss carded a 75 (+5) that included back-to-back double-bogeys on the front nine. The Australian is currently tied for 31st place with a 36-hole total of 148 (+8).
Senior Brandon Rodgers rounded out the UT lineup by registering a second round 81 (+11).
On Saturday, Tennessee will tee off at 7:30 a.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET) from the 10th tee box. The Vols will be paired with ETSU and Chattanooga.
