Strong Second Round Redeems Vols at Augusta

Augusta, Ga. -- As the 2014 Masters week festivities get underway, the 3M Augusta Invitational teed off at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
The Tennessee men's golf team finished Saturday in 10th place after a 36-hole total of 579 (+3). The Vols were led by freshman Jack Smith and his first round 69 (-3). Senior Brandon Rodgers pitched in with a second round 69 (-3) of his own.
The Volunteers saw a drastic improvement from the morning 18 holes to the afternoon 18 holes. In the second round, UT improved by 13 total strokes. Tennessee carded a first round of 296 (+8) and a second round of 283 (-5).
Knoxville natives Smith and Rodgers recorded 36-hole totals of 141 (-3) and 144 (E), respectively. Smith is tied for 9th place while Rodgers is tied for 25th. Between the two, the pair racked up 18 birdies on day one.
Senior Danny Keddie sits tied for 43rd after a two round total of 148 (+4). Keddie has been on a hot streak as of late, recording top-15 finishes in his last three events.
Sophomore Michael Nagy finished tied for 59th with a total of 150 (+6) while sophomore Chad Merzbacher rounded out the Volunteer lineup tied for 62nd with a total of 151 (+7).
On Sunday, the 3M Augusta Invitational will conclude with Tennessee teeing off at 8:45 a.m. (ET). On Monday, the participating teams will have the chance to watch the 2014 Masters Practice Round.
