Sevierville, Tenn. -- The Tennessee men's golf team has a commanding lead after 36-holes at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn.
On Monday, the Vols carded a two round total of 565 (-11) to lead the tournament field by 20 strokes.
Senior Danny Keddie led the Volunteers to a first round 583 (-5) by carding a career tying best of 66 (-6).
"I hit it great this morning," Keddie said. "I had six kick in birdies and nearly holed three wedge shots. Then I had a rough start this afternoon but I got it together and gave myself chances that I just didn't convert. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
Tennessee followed up a solid first round with an even better second round. UT carded a 282 (-6) to wrap up Monday's 36-holes.Sophomore Oliver Goss mimicked Keddie's first round performance by dropping a 66 (-6) of his own. The second round six-under par was a season best for Goss.
"This morning's round I just couldn't get anything going," Goss said. "It was rather boring golf, but still an okay score. The afternoon round, I was able to take advantage of the opportunities I was giving myself. Six-under par is a great round although it had potential to be four or five shots lower. I had a lot of putts that were real close to going in. I'm happy with my days play, but very tired and looking forward to tomorrow. I feel comfortable with the course and I believe the team does also. We need to go out and play well early to get the win."
Goss currently leads the entire Bobby Nichols field with a two-day total of 137 (-7) while Keddie is close behind with a 142 (-2).
Sophomore Chad Merzbacher remains in the tournament top-ten after a 36-hole total of 145 (+1). Merzbacher had rounds of 72 (E) and 73 (+1).
Rounding out the Volunteer starting five are Knoxville natives Jack Smith and Brandon Rodgers. The freshman Smith is tied for 11th after a strong second round of 70 (-2) meanwhile the senior Rodgers is tied for 16th after carding 147 (+3) on Monday.
Sophomore Grant Daugherty competed at the Sevierville Golf Club as an individual, totaling 147 (+3). The Tennessee native is seeing action in his third career tournament and second of the 2013-14 season.
On Tuesday, Tennessee will look to capture back-to-back tournament titles for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The Vols will tee off at 10 a.m. (ET).
