KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Three current Vols and one recent signee competed in the 2014 South Beach International Amateur in Miami Beach, Fla. Find out how they finished here.
Three current Vols, Jordan Gumberg, Chad Merzbacher and Lorenzo Scalise, along with one signee, Hugo Bernard, competed in the 2014 South Beach International Amateur this weekend. The field consisted of 210 players, including 70 of the world's top 600 ranked players and 107 international competitors from 29 countries. The number of international players is the second largest in the world for an amateur event, exceeded only by the British Amateur.
The first two days, all golfers played one round at Miami Beach Golf Club and one round at Normandy Shores Golf Club. Gumberg, Merzbacher and Scalise all posted scores of 1-under par in the opening round, while Bernard shot 4-over par. Scalise fell upon hard times in the second round, posting a 10-over par 81, moving him to 9-over par. Bernard shot 3-over par 73 to move to 7-over par. By the time the windblown second round came to an end, the cut line was set at 3-over par, causing both Scalise and Bernard to miss the cut.
Gumberg and Merzbacher both finished the second round at or above the cut line (+3) to make it to the weekend. Gumberg carded a second round 1-over par 72 to move to even par, while Merzbacher shot 4-over par 74 to move to 3-over par.
The final two rounds, consisting of 88 players (72 plus ties), were both played at Miami Beach Golf Club. Gumberg posted a third round 1-over par 72, while Merzbacher shot a 74 (+3).
On the final day, Gumberg found three birdies, but carded a 5-over par 76 to finish 6-over par for the tournament. Merzbacher recorded 5 birdies and shot even par for the final round, joining Gumberg at 6-over par for the weekend. Both Vols finished in a tie for 50th place.
Gabriel Lench was victorious after posting rounds of 68-66-71-67 to finish 11-under par. Adam Svensson of Canada finished second at 10-under par.
