Who's Playing?
Anna Newell, AJ Newell, Lucia Polo, Hannah Pietila, Mason Chen, Daeun Song (I), Teleri Hughes (I), Emmie Pietila (I)
"We love hosting the Mercedes-Benz tournament," head coach Judi Pavon said. "It's special for the players to compete at home and many of their parents make the trip to watch. As our only home event, the players really look forward to it.
"Cherokee is a really good course and a little different than most we compete on, so it's nice to have other teams come in and see what they think."
The field includes 17 teams, including the #2 ranked South Carolina. Along with South Carolina, Tennessee will host Chattanooga, College of Charleston, #23 Denver, Eastern Kentucky, ETSU, #19 Furman, Kent State, Louisville, Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Penn State, Mississippi, University of Central Florida and Wisconsin.
The field will also include 10 top-100 individuals including Tennessee's own Anna (49) and A.J. (T60) Newell.
"This is a good field this year," Pavon said. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete against South Carolina for the first time this season. There are several really good teams, so it's a nice challenge for us."
The Lady Vols will stick with its same lineup minus Blakesly Warren who is out sick. With that lineup, Tennessee is ranked #9 in the nation. The tournament lineup consists of Anna Newell, AJ Newell, Hannah Pietila, Lucia Polo and Mason Chen.
"We have played really well this season, so I'm looking for that good play and competitiveness to continue this week," Pavon said. "We have had a pretty long break which is good because they needed some rest and had schoolwork to catch up on, but it also came at a time where we had some good momentum going. I'm hoping we can pick up where we left off a few weeks ago."
Tennessee will also play three individuals, Daeun Song, Teleri Hughes and Emmie Pietila.
Continuing the tradition, the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships also serves as an opportunity to honor women's golf legends. This year, Dottie Pepper, a former Furman golfer, and Jean St. Charles will be honored. The Legends Banquet will take place on Friday following the first round of the tournament. More information on the honorees can be found HERE.
Live stats will be available at golfstat.com and will be posted to the tournament central at the conclusion of each round.
