BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday that University of Tennessee track & field athletes Chase Brannon and Kia Jackson have been named to the 2013 SEC Track & Field Community Service Teams.
Brannon, a junior pole vaulter for the Vols, has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Soles4Souls, Boo at the Zoo and attended the UT Chancellor's Breakfast. In addition, the two-time USTFCCCA All-American has helped with gift wrapping for Athletes in Action.
The Brentwood, Tenn., native is a five-time SEC Championship scorer and heads into this week's league meet holding the sixth-best vault mark (17-7/5.36m) in the conference. Last season, Brannon placed eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and is coming off a fourth-place mark at the 2013 Indoor Championships.
Jackson, a sprinter and jumper for the Lady Vols, has made helping others part of her life on Rocky Top. A child and family studies major, Jackson has volunteered with the VolAware Street Fair, Habitat for Humanity, Family Fun Night, Boo at the Zoo, Soles4Souls and has also wrapped for Athletes in Action.
A recent recipient of the prestigious Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Scholarship, the Lithonia, Ga., native is a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection and a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member. On the track, Jackson is a six-time SEC scorer and two-time USTFCCCA Outdoor All-America selection for her performance in the 4x100-meter relay.
The league presents a Community Service Team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight a male and female athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community through superior service efforts.
The Tennessee track & field team returns to action in Columbia, Mo., for the 2013 SEC Outdoor Championships from May 9-12. New league member Missouri will host the meet at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
