BATON ROUGE, La. -- Earlier this week, head coach Jim Kelson stated that it's up to the Vols to show up and do the things necessary to win. On Thursday, the Tennessee men's golf team did just that. Selected as the No. 7 seed in the region, the Vols have quickly shown they belong. After one round of play at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, UT currently sit tied for fourth place.
The top five teams from the Baton Rouge Regional site will advance to the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
Heading into the weekend, Tennessee is in great position to qualify for the NCAA finals after finishing the first round with a 300 (+12).
"I think we are in a good spot, obviously not our best day, but you can't win it in the first round," senior Rick Lamb said. "I felt like I played a lot better than I scored. I just made a few course management mistakes."
The Vols were once again led by freshman sensation Oliver Goss. The Australian import has earned All-SEC First Team and All-SEC Freshman Team honors in just his first season on Rocky Top. Through the first round at the NCAA Regional, Goss currently sits tied for ninth after carding a 73 (+1). Goss was playing some consistent golf including four birdies, until he hit a triple bogey on the 18th hole.
Rounding out the rest of the Vols' starting five at the University Club Golf Course was Jay Vandeventer, Lamb, Michael Nagy, and Thomas Dunne.
The senior Vandeventer carded a first round of 75 (+3) and finished tied for 20th. Vandeventer hit his stride when he shot back-to-back birdies on the 4th and 5th holes. Lamb and Nagy each shot a 76 (+4), which put them in a tie for 32nd place. Dunne completed the Vols' starting five by carding an 81 (+9).
On Friday, Tennessee will be the first team to tee off. The Vols will start their second round at 8:20 a.m. CT from the 1st hole tee box. Tennessee will be paired with Houston and Coastal Carolina.
"We will all make our adjustments and try to put ourselves in a comfortable spot going into the final round," Lamb said.
