KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - With a huge lifetime best on his final throw under the lights of Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium on Friday night, Tennessee sophomore Matthew Hoty became just the second Vol to win the Sea Ray Relays men's shot put competition.
Hoty recorded a push of 62-feet, 8.75-inches (19.12m) to jump past Findlay's Derrick Vicars and win the event on his sixth and final throw. With the win, the Sandusky, Ohio, native becomes the first Vol champion in the event at the Sea Ray Relays since Rob Carlson won it in 1995 with a throw of 61-2 (18.64m).
Since the meet's inception in 1967, Carlson and Hoty are the Vols only two Sea Ray Relay shot put champions. Hoty's mark is good for fourth all-time on the UT outdoor records list and entering the meet would rank third in the nation and first in the NCAA East Qualifying List.
Hoty was one of 11 top-five finishers for the Big Orange on Friday.
Sophomore Vol and Cross Country All-American Peter Okwera, who was running for the first time this outdoor season, added to the exciting end of the meet by finishing as the runner-up in the men's 10,000-meter. Okwera finished in a career best 30 minutes, 10.54 seconds. His teammates Stephen Derlath (6th, 30:37.60) and J.R. Creekmore (16th, 31:36.59) also notched PRs in the race.
Junior Terrance Livingston picked up the first Vol victory on Friday, winning the men's open 400m in 47.04 seconds.
The Lady Vols put on a show in the open 800m, as underclassmen Amirah Johnson and Alexis Panisse went 1-2 and three of their teammates joined them in the top 10. Lady Vol great Chanelle Price set the pace in the first heat and pulled off with 200 meters to go. Johnson crossed the line in a personal record 2:09.11 and Panisse follow in 2:10.07. Kelsey Kane (2:11.43), Brittney Jackson (2:12.29) and Charity Honeycutt (2:12.37) finished 6-7-8 in the event. It was a PR for both seniors Kane and Honeycutt.
In the field, redshirt freshman Erin Champion picked up back-to-back personal best efforts in the pole vault to finish in fifth with a mark of 13-1.5 (4.00m). Junior pole vaulter Linda Hadfield finished with the same mark, but missed less attempts, so was the fourth-place finisher.
In the first steeplechase of the season, Lady Vol Hannah Davidson finished third in a time of 10:44.75.
In preliminary events, Vol Arnez Hardnick and Lady Vol Kia Jackson performed very well. Hardnick placed second in both the 100m and 200m dash, while Jackson qualified first in the 100m. Freshman Felicia Brown dominated her 200m heat to finish as the top qualifier heading into Saturday's Showcase. She finished with a wind-aided PR of 23.04 in the event.
Sophomore Jamol James also qualified for the 100m finals on Saturday, while Jarael Nelvis will appear in the 200m final at 12:30 p.m.
The final day of the 47th annual Sea Ray Relays will begin at noon with the highly-competitive women's invitational discus, where three-time defending champion and former Lady Vol Annie Alexander will look to make it four in a row.
The second-annual Sea Ray Showcase, which is set to begin at 12:30 p.m., features a fan-friendly viewing window for the best races of the meet on Saturday and will consist of the men's and women's heats and sections for seven different events, including the 200m, 1500m, 800m, 400m, 100m, distance medley and 4x100m relays. The Showcase will conclude with the honoring of Tennessee's seniors at approximately 1:45 p.m.
