GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After posting their best round of the tournament with a 294 (+6), the Lady Vols finished in 13th at the Bryan National Collegiate.
"Today was a much better day for the team," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Unfortunately we were so far back after the first two round that we didn't make up much ground, but it was good to see everybody play well today."
Sophomore AJ Newell and junior Chessey Thomas each carded a 1-under par 71, while senior Erica Popson and sophomore Daeun Song each finished the day at 4-over par 76. Senior Sara Monberg wrapped up the final round 5-over 77.
"AJ and Chessey both stepped up with under par rounds and Daeun had a solid tournament for us this week," Pavon said. "Erica wasn't pleased with her round today, but still had a good finish."
Popson led UT finishing in a tie for 23rd with Newell following in a tie for 47th. Song finished tied for 50th, Thomas in a tie for 56th and Monberg tied for 75th.
Virginia continued to hold the lead throughout the tournament, taking home the team title with an 869 (+5) card. Arkansas (873) followed in second and Wake Forest (885) finished third. Vanderbilt (886), Florida (887) and Georgia (888) finished in the fourth through sixth spots, respectively, while NC State (892) and South Carolina (893) followed in seventh and eighth, respectively. Duke (894) and Auburn (894) tied for ninth. North Carolina (897) came in 11th and Michigan State (902) finished 12th. Florida State (908), UNC-Greensboro (927), UNC-Wilmington (928) and Louisville (930) wrapped up the competition in the 14th through 17th slots.
"We have a couple weeks to rest up and prepare for the SEC," Pavon said. "We have traveled much of March so this will be a good time to catch up in school and work on some things in their games that we haven't had time to address."
UT will have three weeks off before returning to action at the SEC Championship in Birmingham, Ala., April 19-21.
