Lady Vols Tied for 3rd at FSU Match-Up

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Lady Vol golf team heads into the final round of the Florida State Match-Up in a tie for third after ending the day at 11-over par 299. Tennessee has a two-day card of 590 (+14) to be tied up with No. 16 Georgia.
"It was a tough day today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Early on it was cool and rainy, but late in the afternoon the wind really picked up. Today we started on the first hole which meant we finished on the back nine which is a little more difficult. We were doing pretty well until we hit No. 17, a cross wind par-3 that we played 4-over."
Erica Popson continues to pace the squad as she shot 1-over 73 for a 36-hole card of 143 (-1). The senior is currently in fourth, tied with Georgia's Manuela Carbajo Re. She is just three strokes off the individual lead. The Davenport, Fla., native has nine birdies through 36 holes, tying with Georgia's Rocio Sanchez Lobato for the most of any individual at the tournament.
Junior Chessey Thomas and sophomore AJ Newell are also in the top-15 for the Lady Vols as Thomas finished 2-over par 74 and Newell was 3-over par 75 on the day. Thomas is currently in 12th and Newell is tied for 14th.
"We are still in contention with a chance to win tomorrow so I feel good about that," Pavon said. "Erica is also in good position, and Chessey and AJ are both playing well."
Senior Sara Monberg rounds out the final score with a 77 (+5) card as she's tied for 32nd heading into the final round. Sophomore Daeun Song is in a tie for 57th after a 36-hole total of 161 (+17).
Tennessee is eight strokes off of No. 6 Oklahoma's lead. Florida State sits in second at 588 (+12).
The Lady Vols tee off at 9 a.m. ET Sunday for the third and final round. UT will be paired with Texas A&M and Furman.
