On Sunday, the Tennessee men's golf team will be teeing off at the two-day 16th Windon Memorial Golf Classic, which is hosted by Northwestern University and is played at the Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Ill.
The 15-team field will play on a special par-71 layout of 7, 081 yards. The course has hosted the U.S. Open, the Western Open, the 1998 USGA Senior Amateur and the 2010 Western Amateur. The Windon has some impressive history, as the tournament's first winner was Stanford's Casey Martin in 1993. The tournament also saw a young golfer by the name of Tiger Woods finish runner-up in 1995.
"We are really looking forward to playing in this fabulous tournament," head coach Jim Kelson said. "The course has high roughs and fast greens, which are elements we really like and thrive playing on."
The play format will consist of five-man teams, with the best four scores counting toward the daily total. Play will be in threesomes with tee times each day. Tennessee opens play Sunday, alongside Ohio State and Northwestern at 9:15 a.m. ET.
For the Vols' starting five, Kelson will send out a relatively young crew. Freshmen Michael Nagy, Chad Merzbacher and Thomas Dunne will all get the call to start Sunday, along with seniors Jay Vandeventer and Rick Lamb. Freshman Grant Daugherty will also compete as an individual.
"There will be a lot of new faces playing on Sunday," Kelson said. "They may be young, but they are good and experienced for their age. Tennessee will be proud to have them out there."
The Volunteers head into their second tournament of the 2012-13 season led by Nagy, who played exceptionally well in Tennessee's first fall tournament appearance, shooting a 2-under par, which was good enough for a tie for 11th place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate earlier this month.
"My play earlier this month really gave me some confidence," Nagy said. "I'm really excited to play this weekend."
The complete 2012 tournament field includes: Northwestern (host), Coastal Carolina, DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Harvard, Indiana, Lamar, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Toledo, and UC Davis.
