CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Lady Vol golf team shot even-par 288 to jump up three spots to 10th in the standings after the second round of play at the Cougar Classic.
Senior Erica Popson carded five birdies on the day for a 2-under par 70 second round total at Yeamans Hall Club. The Davenport, Fla., native is tied for 14th in individual standings after ending round one in a tie for 33rd.
"Today was a better round for us," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Ashlee stepped up today when we needed her. Erica played a great round today which will be a nice confidence boost for her. Sara and Chessey's even par rounds were very solid."
Senior Sara Monberg and junior Chessey Thomas improved in the second round, both shooting even par on the day, dropping two strokes off their first round score. The pair is tied for 35th.
After turning in a first-round total of 82 (+10) on Sunday, freshman Ashlee Pickerell shaved eight strokes off her round one score for a 2-over par 74, carding three birdies.
Sophomore AJ Newell stands tied for 82nd with a 75-77=152 (+5) total.
"As in every round we could have saved a couple shots but all in all it was a really good day," Pavon said.
No. 14 Florida vaulted to the lead through 36 holes with a 565 (-9) total. The Gators have a three-stroke advantage heading into Tuesday's final round over second-place USC (568). No. 8 Vanderbilt sits in third (574).
