KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Jackson (Tenn.) Generals, the Southern League Double-A baseball affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, will host Pat Summitt Appreciation Night on Friday.
The night will be devoted to honoring the legendary University of Tennessee women's basketball head coach emeritus and raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease. A tribute to Summitt will precede the game, which will start at 7:05 p.m. Central time.
The Generals will wear special "Lady Vol Orange" jerseys during their game Friday night against the Mississippi Braves. The jerseys will be auctioned that night with the proceeds benefiting the Pat Summitt Foundation Fund.
The Pat Summitt Foundation makes grants to nonprofits that provide education and awareness of Alzheimer's, as well support services to patients, their families and caregivers. The Foundation also supports research to help treat, prevent, cure, and ultimately eradicate Alzheimer's disease. More information on the Pat Summitt Foundation can be found at www.patsummitt.org.
The all-time winningest coach in NCAA men's or women's basketball with 1,098 victories, Summitt stepped away from head coaching duties in April of 2012 after 38 seasons. She had been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type, in August of 2011. During her head coaching career, Summitt led the Lady Vols to eight national championships, 18 NCAA Final Fours and a combined 32 SEC regular season and tournament titles.
